The Ciavolich family has a rich history that goes back to the 1500s in Bulgaria. Originally wool merchants, they left their homeland to escape the Saracen invasion and made their way to Miglianico, in the province of Chieti, around 1560. In 1853, they built their first wine cellar, an underground structure that still stands today as a testament to their winemaking heritage. The cellar stretches beneath Via Sud, linking to barrel rooms under the family’s palace.
During WWII, a wide cave on the cellar’s Eastern wall was expanded by the Nazis and extended under the nearby convent of Suore di Sant’Anna. The tunnel became a bomb shelter, but in December 1943, the family was forced to leave their estate.
After the war, the Ciavolichs returned to Miglianico and slowly picked up the pieces, including their winemaking. In the 1960s, they inherited the Loreto Aprutino estate in the province of Pescara from Donna Ernestina. Spanning 50 hectares, this estate was later planted with Montepulciano, Trebbiano, and Cococciola, some of the most notable varieties of the region.
